OVERVIEW

This dataset is generated in the frame of the Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF), a part of the EUMETSAT ground segment. The production of Sea Ice products is hosed by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (METNO). The OSI SAF aims at providing products on SST, Fluxes, Sea Ice and Wind for all kinds of users with a focus on users with operational constrains. A main use of the products is within numerical weather and ocean prediction. More information about the OSI SAF is given at http://www.osi-saf.org. The OSI SAF production has been running operationally since 2002, and will continue for a long period.
The Sea Ice products of the OSI SAF are generated on a daily basis using satellite data from the previous day. The product is centred at 12 UTC. They are processed at 04UTC and are guarantied to be available at 06:00 UTC. The Sea Ice products consist of two products. One with the main parameter and one with quality flags, coded as a 16-bits word.
The sea ice concentration product gives the percentage of sea ice in each grid point. This product is currently based on SSM/I data, using the 19 and 37 GHz channels in combination.
This method is sensitive to land influence on the signal, and therefore the coastline is masked as unclassified in the product. The area north of 87.5N is also undefined since the SSM/I swaths do not cover this area. The product area covers all areas that can be expected to be covered by sea ice at the Northern Hemisphere.
More information about the methods, quality and products can be found in the Sea Ice Product User Manual, available at http://saf.met.no
