 Underway data from Vessels

Routine research vessel observations

Objectives

Research vessels are an underused capability of acquiring data in real-time; these vessels are doted of accurate equipments, good technicians and reliable transmission facility to shore. They often go in areas that are far from commercial transect and that are therefore often undersampled. At International level a program has started in 2002 GOSUD (Global Ocean Surface Underway Data) that coordinate data management of the data acquired but different countries. Mersea will be an European contribution to this program

For each country contributing to this activity,  new equipments have been installed on selected ships or existing material will be updated. Transmission capability have been evaluated on each selected ship. Transmission trials have been conducted and data are delivered to the project and to the partners through the In situ data management facilities. Evaluation of cruises and transects for XBT launches where MERSEA will complement programs at national level in done each year

In 2007 58 ships from Europe but also outside Europe had transmitted data to the Coriolis center. All data collected by these ships will be available through Coriolis Data Center. Contact point : coship@ifremer.fr
