The multi-parametric buoy data
of the M3A network will be used in MERSEA for
calibration and validation of the numerical models
developed for the Mediterranean Sea. The pilot
operation of the prototype E1-M3A during 1999-2001
has demonstrated the value of physical and
bio-chemical parameters for the development of
hydrodynamic and ecosystem forecasting models (Siddorn
and Allen, AG 2003, Triantafyllou et al., AG 2003).
The three M3A buoys are deployed in area where key
processes, such as dense water formation, that
affect the whole Mediterranean Sea thermohaline
circulation take place. Furthermore they are
deployed in areas with different ecosystem
characteristics and thus their data can be
considered complementary for the needs of the
ecological model (Biogeochemical Flux Model – BFM)
developed in MERSEA under Work-Package 11 (Special
Focus experiments).
