Overview Fixed-point time series are an essential element of the global ocean observing system. These Eulerian Observatories are uniquely suited for fully sampling 2 of the 4 dimensions (depth and time), thus complementing other components of the observing system (satellites, floats, ships). They resolve a wide range of temporal variability and sample the water column from the surface to the bottom. Fixed-point stations will resolve multi-disciplinary variability and processes like CO2 uptake, biological productivity, fluxes of heat, freshwater momentum and other properties between the ocean and atmosphere, and seismic and biological activity on the bottom

An International Time Series Science Team has been created. Its membership is multidisciplinary, including geological, biological, chemical, and physical scientists whose interests extend from the ocean bottom to the air-sea interface. They have developed the background for time series as an element of the integrated global ocean observing system and are working on strategic plans to implement this element

The program is just starting and access to data is spread in the different centers contributiong to the project.

Products The products that will be available thought this project will be :
  • in-situ observations of ocean/climate related quantities at a fixed geographic location/region , sustained and continuous, contributing to a long-term record at the site
  • as an alternate to a mooring, shipboard observations from regular occupation of a site as at Ocean Weather Stations, historical sites or sites where moorings have not been established provide an alternate method
